The National Unity Government’s (NUG) spokesperson from the Prime Minister’s Office, U Nay Bun Lat, has explicitly announced that they will not accept any forced ceasefire attempts from any single nation. In his statement during the public and international message program, he clarified that attempts by any single country to force negotiations through proximity talks and coercion of accessible groups would be counterproductive and could only lead to division and tension among ethnic forces. The NUG maintains that they will only be open to unified efforts from the international community, particularly ASEAN and neighboring countries.
While the terrorist military council has recently announced a pretense of ceasefire, they continue to violate their own declared ceasefire, resulting in the deaths of 334 civilians due to military attacks. From March 28, when the Sagaing earthquake occurred, until May 9, the military council conducted 372 airstrikes across 13 states and regions. These attacks resulted in 334 civilian deaths and 552 injuries. During this approximately one-and-a-half-month period, the airstrikes destroyed over 500 residential buildings, more than 40 schools, and various religious buildings including over 20 Buddhist monasteries, 4 Christian churches, and 1 mosque.
The military is currently employing various aircraft in their attacks, including jets, drones, paramotors, and small helicopters known as gyrocopters. Beyond aerial attacks, they continue daily artillery strikes and ground operations that include burning villages. The military council’s announced temporary ceasefire from May 6 to May 31 proved meaningless when they bombed a school in Depayin Township, resulting in the deaths of 22 people, including 20 students and 2 teachers. U Nay Bun Lat emphasized that any genuine ceasefire would require international monitoring mechanisms, clear codes of conduct, agreements, and specific consequences for violations – none of which are present in the military’s unilateral announcements.
