The National Unity Government (NUG) has emphasized that without a systematic ceasefire monitoring mechanism led by ASEAN with international participation, effective protection of civilians in Myanmar cannot be achieved. This statement came in response to ASEAN leaders’ special statement regarding the situation in Myanmar, where the NUG outlined its position on various critical issues facing the country.
The NUG welcomed ASEAN’s call for immediate cessation of violence against civilians and public infrastructure, as well as the implementation of specific measures to ensure the safety and security of all civilians. The government also expressed understanding of ASEAN leaders’ urging for a ceasefire to create a safe environment for delivering humanitarian assistance to those in need. Despite the NUG’s declaration of a temporary ceasefire to facilitate humanitarian relief operations in earthquake-affected areas, the military council has continued to commit daily atrocities, including airstrikes, artillery attacks, burning of villages, and extrajudicial killings of civilians, even during the declared ceasefire period.
The NUG, which controls nearly 80 percent of the country’s territory along with ethnic revolutionary forces, has urged direct engagement in areas under their effective administration. The government has also specifically called on ASEAN to facilitate cross-border humanitarian assistance through Myanmar’s neighboring countries. The statement emphasized the importance of utilizing assessment reports from both the NUG and ethnic revolutionary organizations, highlighting the necessity of direct coordination in areas under their control.
Regarding transnational crimes related to Myanmar, particularly drug trafficking, human trafficking, and online scams, the NUG has committed to maximum cooperation with ASEAN in improving coordination among member states, external partners, neighboring countries, and the United Nations. The government has also expressed its readiness to build trust with any organization that fully agrees to take responsibility and accountability for achieving the ultimate goals of the Spring Revolution, including the complete elimination of the military dictatorship, the emergence of a genuine federal democratic union, and the implementation of transitional justice.
