
The National Unity Government (NUG) spokesperson U Nay Bun Lat has announced that Colonel General Aung Thet Oo, commander of Division 77, and his soldiers who were captured during the battle for Indaw town in Sagaing Region are currently under investigation. The NUG will proceed with legal actions based on their testimonies and investigation findings. This announcement was made during today’s public and international message broadcast 8/2025.
On April 7, the revolutionary forces successfully captured Indaw town after Colonel General Aung Thet Oo and his troops fled from their last remaining military outpost at the Japanese Cave Camp. Around 9 PM, unable to withstand the pressure from the surrounding revolutionary forces, the military troops abandoned their position. The fleeing Division 77 commander and his soldiers were subsequently captured. They are currently being detained in accordance with prisoner of war protocols while investigations are being conducted, as detailed by U Nay Bun Lat.
The captured Division 77 commander, Colonel General Aung Thet Oo, is a graduate of the 42nd intake of the Defense Services Academy and had only assumed command of Division 77 in early 2024. According to his background, during the 2021 military coup, he served as Brigadier General and Strategic Operations Commander No. 1 of the Yangon Regional Military Command, where he was responsible for ordering troops to shoot and kill civilian protesters in Yangon. He was later transferred to serve as the Strategic Operations Commander of the Coastal Region Military Command’s Kawthaung District until November 2023, after which he was promoted to commander of Division 77. Colonel General Aung Thet Oo’s family members include his wife Daw Thant Su Nwe Htun, elder son Pyae Shan Oo, and younger son Ant Phon Oo.
