In Aung Myay Thar San Township, Mandalay Region, NTL Company, the constructor of Sky Villa condominium where nearly 200 people died in a building collapse, has announced compensation of 10 million kyat per victim without issuing a formal apology to the bereaved families. The announcement calls for families to submit documentation to claim the compensation payments.
The devastating collapse occurred during a 7.7 magnitude earthquake on March 28, resulting in the death and disappearance of over 200 family members residing in the condominium. Search and rescue operations continue to discover bodies even through August. The Sky Villa condominium was constructed in 2017 and units were sold for up to 80 million kyat each during special housing sales events.
NTL Company has announced they will begin distributing compassionate payments of 10 million kyat per deceased victim starting September 8. Families are required to submit proof of death and relevant documentation at the Sky Villa temporary administration office to claim the compensation. However, the company has notably failed to issue any formal apology to the families of those who perished in the collapse.
The Sky Villa condominium was constructed by NTL Company and marketed by iMyanmar House real estate company. During sales, the property was advertised as having earthquake-resistant foundations and being built on ancestral land with secure ownership, promising peace of mind for future residents. However, when the March 28 earthquake struck, Building A sank six floors into the ground while Buildings B, C, and D completely collapsed. A family member of one of the victims expressed anger that the company had falsely advertised earthquake resistance and sold units for hundreds of millions of kyat to affluent families, yet has not apologized for their deceptive marketing, instead taking a superior position by simply announcing compensation payments without expressing remorse.
