The military has arrested Major General Kyaw Swa Win, Chief of Staff of the Northwestern Regional Military Command based in Monywa, Sagaing Region, on corruption charges. The arrest took place on August 30 and was reportedly connected to disagreements over the management of People’s Militia Forces (PMF), also known as Pyu Saw Htee groups.
According to military sources, tensions arose between Major General Kyaw Swa Win and Regional Commander Major General Myo Min Tun over operational matters. The situation escalated when Major General Kyaw Swa Win reportedly made disparaging remarks about Major General Myo Min Tun, referring to his past as a prisoner of war who had surrendered before becoming Regional Commander. The conflict between the two senior officers primarily centered around disagreements over military operations and the deployment of People’s Militia Forces in the region.
Regional Commander Major General Myo Min Tun is a graduate of Officer Training Course Teza-26 and previously served as Division Commander at Division 11, Laukkaing Regional Operations Command, and Kyaukme No. 1 Operations Command. He was among the officers who surrendered to the MNDAA and allied forces during the capture of Lashio on August 3, 2024. Despite his surrender, Min Aung Hlaing later appointed him as the Commander of the Northwestern Regional Military Command. The arrest of Major General Kyaw Swa Win highlights the ongoing internal conflicts and power struggles within the military hierarchy, particularly in regions experiencing active resistance against military rule.
