The National League for Democracy (NLD) has called on the public to participate in prayer sessions and a video challenge for the release of unjustly detained public leader Aung San Suu Kyi on her upcoming birthday on June 19. The event will mark Aung San Suu Kyi’s 80th birthday in 2025, and the party has requested widespread participation from both domestic and international supporters in showing solidarity with the detained leader.
According to the NLD’s announcement, people are encouraged to conduct prayer sessions at exactly 8:00 AM on the morning of her birthday, either in their homes or wherever they may be, following their respective religious traditions. The prayer session is scheduled to last 8 minutes and is intended to focus on wishes for the release of Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners. Additionally, the party has encouraged participation in the ‘Happy Birthday SUU Video Challenge,’ an initiative led by Suu Kyi’s younger son, U Htein Lin (also known as Mr. Kim). The video challenge welcomes participation from all party members and Myanmar citizens, both within the country and abroad.
As of June 10, Aung San Suu Kyi has been unjustly detained by the military council for 1,590 days. Throughout this period, the military council has continued to levy unfounded charges against her, resulting in multiple prison sentences, while maintaining their illegal grip on power in direct opposition to the democratic will of the people. The military council’s actions represent an ongoing challenge to Myanmar’s democratic aspirations, with their continued detention of Aung San Suu Kyi serving as a symbol of their oppression of civilian leadership and democratic principles.
