The National League for Democracy (NLD) held its sixth interim central committee meeting online on August 23, where crucial decisions were made regarding the country’s political situation. The meeting strongly emphasized their stance against the military council’s planned sham election and called for the immediate release of Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners. The meeting was conducted via Zoom with a total of 92 participants representing various levels of the party’s leadership structure.
The meeting was attended by one presidium member, two central executive committee members, four alternate central executive members, 36 central committee members, 10 alternate central committee members, 25 representatives from states and regions, and 14 members from central working committees. Man Johnny presided over the meeting as chairman, during which representatives from various states and regions presented their activity reports and recommendations for future actions.
The NLD firmly stated that the military council’s proposed election would only escalate conflicts within Myanmar and increase regional instability. Therefore, they urged all parties to reject and refuse cooperation with any election-related processes initiated by the military council. The party emphasized that any political dialogue excluding Aung San Suu Kyi would not lead to a meaningful resolution of Myanmar’s political crisis.
The meeting also approved the expansion of information dissemination networks at state and regional levels to ensure more efficient communication flow. The party stressed that the release of Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners is crucial for addressing Myanmar’s political challenges, and they committed to pursuing all possible means to achieve this goal. The committee made nine unanimous decisions, including these key points, demonstrating the party’s united stance against the military council’s actions and their commitment to restoring democracy in Myanmar.
