The National League for Democracy (NLD) Central Executive Committee has announced that it will take effective action against party members who participate in or contest as candidates in the military council’s sham election process, in accordance with party rules and regulations. The announcement also detailed the legitimacy and results of the 2020 general election.
The general election held on November 8, 2020, was conducted in accordance with international standards as a free and fair election. Out of 1,171 constituencies, voting was successfully held in 1,117 constituencies. Among 38,271,447 eligible voters, 27,512,855 voted for the People’s Parliament, 27,495,555 for the National Parliament, and 30,459,113 for Regional and State Parliaments. The nationwide voter turnout exceeded 71 percent, with the National League for Democracy winning 82.36 percent of all constituencies, resulting in the election of 920 parliamentary representatives.
Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the people of Myanmar boldly decided to exercise their democratic rights, and international diplomats and election observer groups recognized the election’s freedom and fairness. The 2020 general election results, officially announced by the legally constituted Union Election Commission, remain valid and reflect the will of the people. However, the violent military disregarded the people’s will and violated the constitution by seizing power and detaining state government leaders and National League for Democracy leadership.
Currently, the coup military is planning to hold a sham election in the few territories under their control, aiming to deceive the international community and the public while seeking political legitimacy. The National League for Democracy has reiterated that it completely rejects and does not recognize this sham election, and will not cooperate in any form with this process.
