A new military recruit from Infantry Battalion 428 based in Prusho Township, Karenni State, has defected to the Karenni Army (KA) BA-5 with two weapons. The defection occurred around 3 AM on September 2, when the new recruit arrived at the Karenni Army with weapons and ammunition. The defector was identified as a recruit from Training Batch 13 and originally from Salin Township in Magway Region.
The defecting soldier brought with him one MA-1 rifle, one MA-3 rifle, five ammunition magazines, one hand grenade, and 250 rounds of ammunition. He had received military training in Kyaingtong and reported being forced into porter service while traveling from Chauk to Yangon. Officials from the Karenni Army BA-5 confirmed that the defector would be awarded recognition money for his action. Some rewards have already been given, with additional compensation planned once the case reaches higher authorities.
The Karenni Army BA-5 has extended an open invitation to military personnel and police officers who wish to join the people’s side, promising appropriate rewards for those who bring weapons and ammunition. Analysts suggest that such defections are occurring due to declining morale within the military and the practice of forced conscription. The Karenni Army continues to welcome those who wish to leave the military council’s forces and join the civilian resistance, emphasizing their commitment to supporting those who choose to stand with the people rather than the military regime that has been perpetrating violence against civilians.
