The National Unity Government (NUG) issued a statement on March 14 urging for political resolution of disputes between the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) in northern Shan State. The statement expressed concern about the ongoing tensions causing anxiety among local civilians and those participating in the Spring Revolution. The NUG emphasized that as revolutionary organizations working to fulfill the people’s desires, they have a special responsibility to alleviate public concerns.
The statement highlighted that the leaders of both organizations view the current conflicts as partner disputes and are committed to resolving them through political means. It referenced the historical alliance agreement signed in 1976 between the Kachin Independence Organization and the Palaung State Liberation Front, noting how these ethnic groups have historically lived and worked together in adjacent territories. The agreement specifically emphasized that any conflicts between the two organizations would be resolved through partnership-based conflict resolution methods.
During the Spring Revolution era, all revolutionary forces have identified the military dictatorship as a common enemy and established the building of a new federal democratic union as their shared goal. The statement noted that through the unified efforts of revolutionary forces, military council-free zones have emerged extensively across regions. The NUG emphasized that the revolution is now approaching a crucial point where the fall of the military dictatorship and nationwide liberation are within reach. The statement also warned about the military council’s primary strategy of attempting to create divisions between revolutionary forces as it faces weakening power and defeats on multiple fronts.
The NUG expressed confidence that the leadership of both organizations can prevent current ground-level friction from escalating into broader ethnic tensions. They believe that most issues can be resolved through face-to-face negotiations between the parties. The statement welcomed recent developments indicating central-level discussions between the groups and their intention to seek public opinion, viewing these as positive steps toward people-centered problem-solving. The NUG affirmed its readiness to assist in the political resolution process as needed, emphasizing that all revolutionary organizations, being people-focused entities, can overcome their challenges through methods that prioritize public interests and advance toward their shared goal of establishing a federal democratic union.
