The National Unity Government (NUG) has officially announced the extension of the temporary ceasefire period by an additional week to facilitate humanitarian aid operations in earthquake-affected regions. The initial ceasefire was declared following the powerful earthquake that struck on March 28, during which all offensive operations, except defensive actions, were suspended in the affected districts and adjacent regions from March 30 to April 12.
In recognition of the devastating impact of the earthquake on Myanmar’s civilians who lost lives and property, the NUG has designated April 13 to April 20 as the National Week of Mourning and Consolation. To ensure the smooth continuation of humanitarian assistance during this period, the Ministry of Defense of the National Unity Government has issued Special Directive 3/2025 to the People’s Defense Force and People’s Defense Teams, instructing them to maintain the suspension of all offensive operations, except defensive actions, in earthquake-affected areas and related districts. The directive also includes provisions for providing necessary assistance and protection to both domestic and international aid organizations.
NUG Prime Minister’s Office spokesperson U Nay Bun Lat explained the extension during a press briefing. He clarified that following the completion of the initial two-week period, the government has extended the ceasefire for an additional week, coinciding with the designated National Week of Mourning and Consolation. Meanwhile, despite the military council’s announcement of their own temporary ceasefire from April 2 to April 22, reports indicate that they continue to conduct offensive operations and aerial bombardments, resulting in ongoing civilian casualties. This demonstrates the contrast between the NUG’s commitment to humanitarian concerns and the military council’s continued aggression against civilians despite their declared ceasefire.
