The Spring Revolution Public Strike Forces have called on Myanmar workers in Thailand to strike and wear black on April 4 in protest of military council leader Min Aung Hlaing’s presence at the BIMSTEC meeting in Thailand. This action was decided as a response to Min Aung Hlaing’s attempts to gain international recognition through diplomatic backdoors. The movement groups emphasized that this coordinated protest action is necessary to show opposition to the military council’s leadership.
Min Aung Hlaing faces an arrest warrant from the Buenos Aires court in Argentina for genocide against the Rohingya people. He is responsible for the killing of thousands of civilians in Myanmar, conducting airstrikes against civilian populations, and continuing attacks on civilians even during the recent earthquake crisis period. The revolutionary forces have condemned BIMSTEC officials for allowing his participation in the meeting, viewing it as a callous disregard for the suffering of Myanmar’s people. The decision to permit his attendance at the international gathering has been widely criticized as it appears to legitimize his authority despite his record of human rights violations.
The Thai people have historically shown understanding and support for Myanmar’s democratic movements and successive revolutionary struggles, standing with the oppressed people of Myanmar for many years. According to social media and news reports, many Thai citizens have expressed opposition to Min Aung Hlaing, who continues to brutally attack and bomb civilians during both the Spring Revolution and the recent earthquake crisis period. The revolutionary forces have expressed particular gratitude to the Thai people for their consistent solidarity with the oppressed people of Myanmar and their understanding of the current situation. The movement has called for continued solidarity from Thai citizens in supporting Myanmar people’s resistance efforts against the military council’s oppression.
