A Thai employer has paid 550,000 baht in compensation for the death of Myanmar worker Ko San Tway, who was electrocuted while working at a construction site in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The compensation was handed over to the deceased worker’s younger brother on August 18, along with an additional 50,000 baht provided by Pak Kong San Chun.
Ko San Tway had legally entered Thailand for work through Htay Service Agent Co., Ltd. from Myanmar under the MoU system. The fatal accident occurred on July 31 when he was handling a water pump in a reservoir at the construction site, resulting in electrocution. Initially, the employer attempted to settle the matter with only the 50,000 baht payment from Pak Kong San Chun, but through the intervention of labor rights protection groups, a more appropriate compensation was secured.
Representatives from the Worker Alliance Group (WAG) traveled directly to Chiang Mai to negotiate with the employer. During these negotiations, an agreement was reached to handle the matter in accordance with legal procedures, and the employer voluntarily agreed to provide 550,000 baht in compensation. This compensation has significantly reduced the financial burden on the deceased worker’s wife, particularly regarding travel expenses and other costs she would have incurred in coming to Thailand. The successful negotiation of this compensation demonstrates the importance of proper labor rights protection and the value of advocacy groups in securing fair treatment for migrant workers and their families in cases of workplace accidents.
