A Myanmar worker named Ko San Htway died from electrocution at a construction site in Mae Ho Phra village, Chiang Mai, Thailand. The incident occurred around 8 AM on July 31 while he was operating a water pump in a reservoir at the construction site. However, the company falsely reported the cause of death as drowning, prompting the victim’s family to seek assistance from the Worker Alliance Group (WAG).
Rescue workers and fellow laborers initially transported Ko San Htway’s body to Mae Tan Hospital, where it remained overnight before being transferred to Chiang Mai Hospital for examination the following day. During the medical examination, the company’s clerk and engineers deliberately misreported the cause of death as drowning. According to Ko Mone Tine from WAG, the deceased’s body remains unburied, with the employer refusing to take responsibility and the Myanmar employment agency showing negligence in handling the case.
Ko San Htway was legally employed through Htay Service Agent Co, Ltd from Myanmar under the MOU system. Regarding the death, site supervisors offered 50,000 baht in compensation and promised to handle the funeral arrangements. However, Ko San Htway’s younger brother rejected this offer and sought assistance from WAG to pursue justice. WAG has stated they will work to revise the case details and seek compensation of up to 800,000 baht under the relevant labor laws and regulations.
