A significant historical ceremony was held at Seoul City Hall in South Korea to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the May 18 Gwangju Democratic Revolution. The event was attended by U Yan Naing Tun, Myanmar’s representative to the Republic of Korea from the National Unity Government (NUG), and U Tin Htay Aung, who serves as both a support team member of the NUG Korea Representative Office and co-chairman of the Anti-Military Coup Committee. Several Myanmar activists who have been actively participating in Myanmar’s Spring Revolution were also present at the ceremony.
The commemorative event drew a distinguished audience including ministers from the South Korean government, members of parliament from various political parties, international diplomats, and specially invited guests. This ceremony holds particular significance as it honors the Gwangju Democratic Revolution, a pivotal moment in South Korea’s democratic journey, and bears relevance to Myanmar’s current struggle for democracy.
The presence of representatives from Myanmar’s democratic forces at this historic event demonstrates the international community’s recognition and support for the Myanmar people’s fight for democracy. During the ceremony, participants discussed the parallel nature of democratic struggles in South Korea and Myanmar, while also exploring ways to strengthen bonds and cooperation between the people of both nations. The event served as a platform for solidarity between two nations that have experienced similar struggles in their pursuit of democratic values and human rights.
