At an open meeting of the Security Council on the protection of civilians in conflict at UN Headquarters in New York, Myanmar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun, urged action against the military council’s brutal acts. He emphasized that the military council is waging war against Myanmar’s civilians and committing war crimes. Although the UN Security Council has strongly condemned the military group’s brutalities through Resolution 2669/2022, the military continues to perpetrate its atrocities.
The Ambassador stressed that the UN and Security Council need to take stronger action to protect civilians. He insisted that those who commit acts of war against civilians must be held accountable, and the military group and its leaders should no longer enjoy impunity. He urged the Security Council and all member states to make decisive resolutions. The Ambassador also emphasized the need to demand an immediate halt to airstrikes and brutal acts, as well as ensure unhindered delivery of humanitarian assistance to those in need.
Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun strongly emphasized that providing weapons, ammunition, jet fuel, or legitimacy to the military group encourages the killing of innocent people, and therefore called for demands to stop such support from any country, organization, or individual currently providing assistance. He stressed that to comprehensively resolve Myanmar’s crisis, it is necessary to address the root causes – the elimination of the military dictatorship system and the end of the illegal military coup. The Ambassador noted that despite facing severe hardships, the people of Myanmar remain resilient and have not given up hope, maintaining their firm aspirations for peace, democracy, and a federal union.
