
According to a statement from the National Unity Government, a moderate earthquake struck near Mandalay city in the Mandalay Region at 10:25 PM Myanmar Standard Time on April 27. The earthquake, which had a magnitude of 4.4 on the Richter scale, occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers and caused concern among residents in Mandalay, Sagaing, and Pyin Oo Lwin cities.
Local residents in various parts of Mandalay city fled their homes to the streets due to the earthquake, with particularly high levels of concern reported in Maharaungmye Township. According to local residents, the earthquake was accompanied by loud sounds and two distinct tremors, leading many to decide to sleep on the streets for safety. A local resident reported that they experienced two strong tremors with loud noises, prompting their decision to spend the night outdoors.
According to information released by the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management of the National Unity Government, this earthquake is one of the aftershocks following the major Sagaing earthquake that occurred approximately one month ago. The Sagaing earthquake, which struck on March 28, measured 7.7 on the Richter scale, and has been followed by 157 aftershocks to date. The frequency and intensity of these aftershocks have contributed to ongoing concerns among residents in the affected regions, particularly given the significant impact of the initial earthquake.
