Military council leader Min Aung Hlaing and his wife Kyu Kyu Hla will attend the 80th anniversary commemoration of World War II victory at Red Square in Moscow, Russia, according to military sources in Naypyidaw. This trip marks Kyu Kyu Hla’s first official overseas appearance as First Lady, following an official invitation from Russia.
The couple will depart from Naypyidaw Airport on the morning of May 7 aboard a Myanmar Airways Airbus A319 aircraft. The journey will include a refueling stop in China. The ceremony is scheduled to take place on May 9 at Moscow’s Red Square, where various international leaders are expected to gather for the commemoration of the end of World War II.
However, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy has issued concerning warnings regarding the event. Ukraine rejected Russia’s proposal for a ceasefire from May 8 to 10 and warned that they cannot guarantee the safety of foreign leaders attending the ceremony. Despite these security concerns, Min Aung Hlaing and Kyu Kyu Hla have decided to proceed with their attendance at Russia’s invitation. Military sources in Naypyidaw confirmed that the invitation specifically included Kyu Kyu Hla in her capacity as First Lady, making this her first international appearance in such a role.
