Mandalay Division – According to News, the military junta conducted airstrikes on Kyauk Kan village, which is located within the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Bagan Archaeological Zone in Nyaung-U Township, Mandalay Region.
On February 13, the military junta conducted airstrikes on Kyauk Kan village in Kan Ni Pauk village group, located within the UNESCO-listed Bagan Archaeological Zone in Nyaung-U Township. The strikes caused strong explosions and vibrations on ground that could potentially damage ancient pagodas in the area.
“The military junta conducted airstrikes in the UNESCO zone without any ongoing battles. We don’t yet know the extent of casualties and damage. The ground was shook by the airstrikes. Despite rules against firing weapons or fighting in the UNESCO zone, the military council conducted these airstrikes. It’s very close to the pagodas. The military council is conducting airstrikes even in UNESCO-listed religious zones,” Ko Zee, the Head of People Defense Organization of Nyaung-U, said to news.
Additionally, approximately 300 military juntas from both Kyauk Pa Daung and Nyaung-U townships are conducting operations by ambush positions along the Nyaung-U-Kyauk Pa Daung and Nyaung-U-Chauk highway roads. So, Ko Zee advised to be aware of military movements.
“The military junta ignores the religious zone just because of its status. Although being a UNESCO zone, the military junta could conduct airstrikes at any time. Therefore, we want people to dig bomb shelters,” Ko Zee further stated.
