
Police and military sources have confirmed that military intelligence is conducting an urgent investigation into the shooting death of retired Brigadier General Choe Thun Aung in Yangon’s Mayangone Township. Following the shooting at his residence on Shwe Hnin Si 6th Street in Ward 5 of Mayangone Township on the morning of May 22, the military council collected all CCTV footage from the area. Intelligence officials are now carefully analyzing the footage for images of the shooters and their entry and exit routes.
The military council’s deputy leader Soe Win has ordered the immediate arrest of the perpetrators, and due to the incident occurring while he was in Yangon, there is intense pressure on relevant township commanders and senior officers. Retired Brigadier General Choe Thun Aung was an instructor at the National Defense College, teaching courses on Internal Security & Counterterrorism and International Relations. He had previously served as ambassador to Brunei and Cambodia, and after returning to Myanmar, continued teaching at the National Defense College.
As one of Min Aung Hlaing’s trusted associates, Brigadier General Choe Thun Aung attended the Armed Forces Day military parade in Naypyidaw on March 26, 2025, and returned to Yangon via military transport aircraft on March 28. Min Aung Hlaing has been implementing a people’s militia strategy through veteran organizations, with Brigadier General Choe Thun Aung serving as a regional level leader. On January 1, 2023, Min Aung Hlaing awarded him the Wunna Kyaw Htin title along with 5 ticals of gold as an honorary award.
