A couple who acted as guides for military columns in Thayetkone Township, Bago Region, were killed during an encounter with resistance forces, according to a spokesperson from the Pyay District People’s Defense Force. The incident occurred around 6 PM on September 3rd, when resistance forces attempted to arrest Moe Swe and Chaw Gyi from Yonepintet village after receiving information about their activities as military informants. The couple resisted arrest and attempted to flee, resulting in their deaths during the ensuing confrontation.
The couple had been accused of multiple activities supporting the military, including guiding army columns, providing intelligence about resistance force locations, and revealing the positions of landmines. Despite repeated warnings from resistance forces to cease these activities, they continued their collaboration with the military. During August, the military conducted three separate operations in Thayetkone Township, during which they engaged in indiscriminate firing of heavy and light weapons, burning civilian homes, forcibly confiscating valuable property, and conscripting civilians under the military service law.
Notably, on August 12th, 13th, and 14th, military columns systematically burned down several villages in Thayetkone Township, including Yonepintet, Thatywakyauk, Thayet-kaing-gyo, Boekone, and Kyetkyee villages, forcing thousands of local residents to flee their homes. Multiple clashes occurred between resistance forces and the military during this period. Local residents remain fearful due to the military’s violent actions and are unable to return to their homes due to ongoing security concerns. The unstable situation continues to prevent displaced villagers from returning to their communities, as reported by local sources.
