According to factory sources, Military Furniture Factory No. 2 near Tamawaddy in Mandalay collapsed due to a 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck in the afternoon of March 28, resulting in deaths and injuries. The factory collapse claimed the lives of three workers, including machine operator U Aye Zaw, inventory controller U Myint Naing, and another worker.
Nine people, including machine operators and daily wage workers Aung Soe Min, Aung Moe Hein, Ma Kyu Kyu Thin, U Kyaw Maung Lwin, and U Win Nyunt, sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment. The earthquake also caused significant damage to staff quarters within the factory compound. Sources indicate that the factory manager, Major Khun Tun Lwin, has failed to provide necessary assistance to those affected by the disaster.
Military Furniture Factory No. 2 is under the management of Major Khun Tun Lwin from the Construction Division, commonly known as GE, within the military establishment. Sources suggest there are concerns about potential mismanagement of support funds, either by Major Khun Tun Lwin himself or by civilian supervisor U Win Nyunt. An investigation into the handling of support funds may be necessary to ensure proper distribution of aid to affected workers and their families.
Currently, factory workers and their families affected by the earthquake are facing severe hardships, including lack of access to water, electricity, and food. Their living quarters have been severely damaged, leaving many without proper shelter. There is an urgent need for immediate assistance to support the affected families, but responsible authorities have reportedly failed to provide emergency aid and support to those in need. The situation highlights the ongoing challenges faced by civilian workers under military management during times of crisis.
