A 25-year-old man named Maung Myat Min Khant was forcibly taken by the military as a porter at Inya Lake in Yangon. According to his friend, the incident occurred around 8 PM on June 26 when Maung Myat Min Khant, a resident of Ward 12 in South Okkalapa Township, was visiting Inya Lake in Kamayut Township with his friends. Plain-clothed soldiers seized him and transported him away in a hearse used for charity work, despite the presence of many witnesses at the lake embankment.
Following his abduction, Maung Myat Min Khant’s friends and relatives reported the incident to the South Okkalapa Township Police Station and the Ward 12 Administrative Office. They conducted searches for his whereabouts, but the police indicated that he might have been recruited as a new military serviceman. According to his friends, they have lost all contact with him since his capture by the plain-clothed soldiers last night, and his current location of detention remains unknown. His friends and family members continue to investigate his whereabouts.
This forced recruitment of civilians as porters and military servicemen represents a serious human rights violation by the military council and contravenes international law. The practice of abducting civilians and forcing them into military service has become increasingly common under the military regime, causing widespread fear and concern among the public. Maung Myat Min Khant’s family and friends are actively seeking assistance from relevant organizations while continuing their efforts to secure his release. The incident has heightened existing concerns about the military’s ongoing human rights violations and their practice of forced recruitment, which has been widely condemned by both local and international communities.
