Local sources report that in Yeikgyi Township, Ayeyarwady Region, military forces have arrested six civilians and burned down houses belonging to those who managed to escape during a raid targeting street vendors near Kyaukkatchaung road junction. The incident began on July 21 when military forces conducted a sudden raid on street vendors in the Nyaungmaw village tract area near Kyaukkatchaung road junction. During the operation, while four men managed to escape, four women were arrested and taken to the Ngathayinchaung police station.
Following these initial arrests, on July 22, military forces and police personnel from Bhonekon and Kanni police stations in Thabaung Township conducted search operations at the homes of those who had escaped. The situation escalated when military forces and police arrived at the house of Ko Win Aung, a vendor from Alegyun village who had escaped, during the night of July 22. They proceeded to burn down his house and arrested two additional villagers during the operation. Local sources confirm that the total number of arrested civilians has now reached six, though the specific reasons behind the military’s actions, including the arrests and house burnings, remain unclear.
The ongoing military operations have created an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty in the area, forcing some residents to flee their homes for safety. These acts of violence have not only disrupted the daily lives of local civilians but have also severely impacted their economic activities and livelihoods. The local community reports that such aggressive actions by the military forces have become increasingly concerning, as they target ordinary civilians trying to make a living through small-scale trading activities. The destruction of private property and arbitrary arrests have left the community in a state of constant anxiety, with many uncertain about their future security and ability to continue their regular economic activities in the area.
