Military sources and CDM Captain Zin Yaw have confirmed that Colonel Kyaw Myo Aung, the Strategic Commander from Infantry Division 11 Headquarters who was killed in action during clashes with the Arakan Army (AA) in Kyaukphyu Township, Rakhine State, has been posthumously promoted to the rank of Brigadier General.
The incident occurred during fighting between military council forces and the AA in Kyaukphyu Township, Rakhine State on May 27. Colonel Kyaw Myo Aung was fatally shot by an AA sniper during the engagement. He was 45 years old at the time of his death and was a graduate of Officer Training Course 28. According to CDM Captain Zin Yaw, while the position of Strategic Commander typically holds the rank of Colonel, he was promoted to Brigadier General after his death, which is unusual since this rank is normally reserved for Division Commanders, while even Deputy Division Commanders typically hold only the rank of Colonel.
The remains of Colonel Kyaw Myo Aung were transported by helicopter to Yangon, where funeral services were held at Infantry Division 11 Headquarters in Intaing. He was subsequently given a military funeral with full honors at Mingaladon Military Cemetery. Military sources note that this posthumous promotion to Brigadier General is exceptional, as such a rank is typically only achieved through appointment as a Division Commander, suggesting the promotion was granted specifically due to his death in combat. The military hierarchy traditionally reserves the rank of Brigadier General for Division Commander positions, while even Deputy Division Commanders typically hold the rank of Colonel, making this posthumous promotion particularly noteworthy within the context of military council’s command structure.
