A bomb attack occurred during a military council’s election meeting at the General Administration Department office in East Dagon Township, Yangon. According to sources, the Yangon UG People Army (YUPA) forces carried out an attack with two hand grenades at the township administrative office near Minhla Kyaw Swar Road and Inwa Road at 7:40 PM on August 15, where ward administrators and military council members were holding a meeting regarding the general election.
Following the attack, there were likely casualties among the military council-appointed administrators, soldiers, and police personnel. Although security forces conducted lockdown operations and searches around the GAD office and surrounding areas after the attack, the urban guerrilla fighters managed to withdraw safely without any casualties. A responsible person from the organization confirmed that they targeted this office because it was actively supporting the military council’s election preparations, and they had received intelligence that many ward administrators from East Dagon Township were attending the meeting.
The responsible official from YUPA explained that the simultaneous detonation of two hand grenades resulted in a significant explosion and likely caused considerable damage. The YUPA announced that they will continue to escalate urban operations in collaboration with allied forces. They have advised civilians to stay away from locations frequented by military council soldiers, police personnel, ward offices, and administrators. The public has been warned not to go outside when they hear explosions and has been requested to provide whatever support they can to the urban guerrilla forces.
