At least seven civilians were killed and many others were injured in an airstrike by the military council forces in the Mawchi area of Pharuso Township, Karenni State, according to local residents. The attack occurred around 11 AM on June 25, targeting a tin mining operation and a general store in the mountain village of Mawchi area, despite there being no active fighting in the region. The high casualty count was attributed to the timing of the attack, which occurred while workers were actively engaged in their duties at the mining site.
Local sources report that while fighting was occurring in the Pharuso area, the Mawchi region where the airstrike took place had no active combat. Search and rescue operations are ongoing, and the death toll may rise further according to sources on the ground. The military council has been consistently targeting civilian areas, including internally displaced persons camps, monasteries, and schools, rather than actual combat zones. The military’s air force has been conducting reconnaissance flights over Karenni State using fighter jets and Y12 aircraft, prompting revolutionary forces to urge civilians to follow air raid safety protocols and warnings.
Simultaneously, in Magway Region’s Pakokku Township, specifically in the western part of the Kamma area, the military council’s air force based in Tatmadaw Bridge conducted eleven separate airstrikes using Y12 aircraft. The attacks occurred between 6:00 AM and 6:45 AM, during which more than thirty bombs were dropped. Local sources indicate that the military council is conducting clearance operations in the Kamma area with over 1,000 troops. The extent of damage caused by these airstrikes has not yet been fully assessed. These attacks demonstrate the military council’s continued strategy of using airpower against civilian targets, often in areas where there is no active resistance, resulting in significant civilian casualties and destruction of civilian infrastructure.
