The military council has been conducting continuous airstrikes targeting schools, monasteries, and residential homes in the Taung Kya Inn area of Kyun Daw town, Kawkareik Township, Karen State, according to local residents. Starting from the morning of April 17, the first day of the Myanmar New Year, until the evening, the military forces have been carrying out repeated attacks using Y-12 aircraft and fighter jets. While the attacks have resulted in damage to schools, monasteries, and homes, the extent of civilian casualties has not yet been confirmed.
The attacks began at 8 AM targeting Kan Ni and Thayet Taw areas, followed by strikes on Magalon area around 9 AM. From 11 AM until past 1 PM, continuous airstrikes were conducted on Thone Htet Thone Su, Kyauk Thalite, Dauk Palan, and Win Ka villages. There was no active fighting in the area when the attacks occurred. On this New Year’s Day, while children were playing and adults were visiting monasteries, villagers were forced to flee to safety. A resident who escaped from Kan Ni village to Tha Lay village in Hpa-an described the situation to reporters.
Initial reports indicate that the airstrikes destroyed a school building in Kyauk Thalite village and damaged homes and compounds in Thone Htet Thone Su and Migalon villages. Currently, KNLA allied forces are positioned along the Kawkareik-Kyun Daw Taung Kya Inn road, with ongoing military tensions near Infantry Battalions 545/546 in Kyun Daw. The military council has deployed approximately 200 troops to control the Gyaing/Kawkareik bridge on the Hpa-an side, restricting bridge access and establishing defensive positions, according to military zone sources.
