A monastery in Shwe Mutaw village, Naung Cho Township, Northern Shan State, was targeted in an airstrike by the military council forces, resulting in injuries to one Buddhist nun and the destruction of the monastery along with five nearby houses, according to local residents. The attack occurred on February 28th in the afternoon when a military jet fighter conducted bombing raids and launched rocket attacks on the religious compound.
The incident took place between 2:59 PM and 3:13 PM, with the monastery being directly targeted in the assault, as confirmed by local witnesses. The attack caused injuries to a Buddhist nun who was residing in the monastery and resulted in the complete destruction of the religious building. Additionally, five residential houses in the immediate vicinity of the monastery suffered significant damage from the aerial bombardment.
According to a local resident’s testimony, the airstrikes failed to impact any revolutionary forces or their support personnel, instead primarily affecting innocent civilians and religious structures. The military council’s deliberate targeting of these facilities represents a violation of international law and humanitarian standards, with local residents pointing out that such actions constitute war crimes against civilian populations. The attack on the monastery and surrounding civilian areas demonstrates the military council’s continued pattern of targeting non-military structures and civilian populations in their operations.
