According to a statement from a People’s Defense Force official in Salin Township, an airstrike by the military council forces on a monastery in Kan Mon Kyun village, Salin Township, Magway Region, has resulted in the death of one civilian and caused significant damage to religious structures. The attack occurred around 4:15 PM on March 20, when military aircraft deliberately targeted the area with 300-pound and 500-pound bombs, despite there being no active conflict in the region at the time of the bombing.
The attack resulted in injuries to three monastery workers (Kappiya), with one fatality among them. Additionally, a pregnant woman living in a house near the monastery sustained leg injuries from bomb fragments. Kan Mon Kyun village had previously been subjected to complete destruction by military council forces on March 28, 2023, when they burned down the entire village. The local population has since been surviving primarily on corn kernels and broken rice, highlighting the severe humanitarian situation in the area.
This inhumane attack represents another example of the military council’s systematic targeting of civilian populations. Local residents point out that deliberately targeting religious buildings and civilian areas constitutes a violation of international law. Kan Mon Kyun village, which once enjoyed relative economic prosperity, has now been reduced to struggling for basic necessities due to repeated attacks and destruction by the military council. The incident underscores the ongoing pattern of violence against civilian targets and the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the region under military council rule.
