A monastery in Kyun Daung village, Nyaung Thar Gyi Township, Mandalay Region, was targeted in an airstrike by the military council forces, resulting in severe injuries to a monk, a seven-year-old novice, and a young volunteer worker, while the monastery building was destroyed by fire. The incident occurred around 6 PM on April 14, 2024.
The military council forces conducted the attack using fighter jets, dropping two bombs on the Ye Lay Monastery. U Thay Wa Ra, aged 54, sustained life-threatening injuries in the attack. Additionally, a seven-year-old novice monk and a twenty-year-old volunteer who was helping at the monastery during the Thingyan festival period were also severely injured in the bombing.
The airstrike resulted in the complete destruction of the monastery buildings by fire, with all contents and facilities being destroyed. According to local sources, the military council forces have been deliberately targeting civilian locations, particularly religious buildings and schools. These attacks have led to a continuous pattern of injuries and deaths among innocent civilians, including religious figures and children. The targeting of religious sites and civilians represents an escalation in the military council’s campaign of violence against its own people, causing widespread destruction and suffering in communities across Myanmar.
