A monastery in Nabepinlae village, Wetlet Township, Sagaing Region, was targeted in an aerial attack by the military council’s forces, resulting in serious injuries to a Buddhist monk and two civilians, according to local sources. The attack occurred on August 18, 2023, at approximately 9:51 AM when a fighter jet from the Tataoo Air Base conducted two separate airstrikes on the monastery. The attack resulted in severe injuries to a 70-year-old novice monk, a 70-year-old woman, and an 11-year-old boy.
The airstrike caused significant damage to a dharma hall within the monastery compound, and those injured were individuals who had been seeking shelter at the monastery. Among the injured, the condition of the 70-year-old woman is reported to be critical, while the others are in stable condition, according to local residents. The dharma hall was struck by rocket fire during the attack. The incident has highlighted the ongoing pattern of indiscriminate attacks by the military council forces against civilian targets.
The military council has been conducting frequent aerial attacks on monasteries and villages throughout the Sagaing Region without any justification, prompting local information networks to warn residents to remain extremely vigilant. The military council forces have been deliberately targeting civilian areas and have shown no restraint in attacking religious buildings. This incident represents another example of the military council’s continued aggression against civilian populations and religious institutions, demonstrating their disregard for civilian safety and religious sanctuaries.
