The military council conducted an unprovoked airstrike using 500-pound bombs near Kwin Gyi village in Thee Khaing Township, Sagaing Region. The attack, which occurred at 5 PM on March 8, resulted in a buffalo being hit by a bomb blast, getting thrown into the air, and dying after becoming entangled in a tree. According to local residents, while the bombs landed outside the village area preventing human casualties, the incident has caused significant fear and anxiety among the local population.
According to a Kwin Gyi villager, the military council dropped one bomb near a road junction by a coconut tree at the village entrance, which destroyed a fuel shop and killed three buffaloes. Another bomb was dropped in a paddy field near an agricultural center located between Kwin Gyi village and Pauk Kone village. The bombing created large craters in the impact areas, and the villager noted that they were fortunate the bombs did not fall within the village itself. The indiscriminate nature of these airstrikes demonstrates the military council’s disregard for civilian safety and property.
Kwin Gyi village, home to approximately 200 households, has seen most of its residents forced to flee their homes due to the military council’s unprovoked bombing campaign. The deliberate attacks by the military council have severely disrupted the daily lives of local residents, who now live in constant fear and uncertainty. These targeted attacks on civilian areas by the military council represent clear violations of international humanitarian law, as they demonstrate a pattern of deliberately targeting civilian populations and infrastructure without military necessity or justification. The ongoing attacks have created a humanitarian crisis in the region, with displaced villagers facing significant challenges in finding safe shelter and maintaining their livelihoods.
