The Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) has reported that a military airstrike in Mong Long town, Kyaukme Township, Northern Shan State, has resulted in the death of a Buddhist nun and a civilian, while injuring several others including monks and novices. The attack occurred on August 30th in the evening, during a period when there was no active fighting in the area, indicating a deliberate targeting by the military council forces.
The military council forces conducted the airstrike at 10:30 PM, dropping four 250-pound bombs on Pan Thapyay village in Mong Long town. This deliberate attack resulted in the immediate death of a Buddhist nun and a woman, while seriously injuring two monks, three novices, and one civilian man. The bombing also caused significant damage to infrastructure, destroying four residential houses, five monastery buildings, and one religious hall. The attack has highlighted the military council’s continued targeting of civilian areas and religious structures.
Prior to this incident, on July 29th, the military council had also conducted airstrikes on Mong Long town, resulting in the death of one civilian man and the destruction of seven houses. These systematic attacks on civilian areas by the military council have caused widespread fear among local residents, forcing many to flee their homes and seek refuge elsewhere. The military council’s airstrikes constitute violations of international humanitarian law and represent war crimes against innocent civilians. The continued targeting of civilian areas, including religious buildings and residential zones, demonstrates a pattern of deliberate attacks on non-military targets, causing significant civilian casualties and displacement in the region.
