On April 13, 2025, during Thingyan Eve, the military council conducted an unprovoked aerial attack on Nyaung Kone village in Kawlin Township, Sagaing Region. A fighter jet from Meiktila Air Base carried out the attack around 12:30 PM, targeting a fuel trading area within the village. The attack resulted in injuries to one man and one woman, according to local sources. The military assault occurred without any ongoing battles in the area, demonstrating a deliberate targeting of civilian infrastructure.
This aerial attack is part of the military council’s planned operations against civilians during the Thingyan festival period. Reports indicate that the military council has ordered air force officers and personnel to remain on duty throughout the Thingyan period, canceling their holidays to conduct aerial operations against civilians. Although Nyaung Kone village is not under military council control, the attack was carried out against civilian targets without any military engagement in the area. The deliberate targeting of civilian infrastructure and businesses has caused significant damage to the community and created an atmosphere of fear among local residents.
The aerial assault has resulted in extensive damage to buildings, homes, and businesses within the village, causing widespread fear and concern among local residents. The fact that such brutal attacks are being carried out during the traditional cultural festival of Thingyan has been highlighted by locals as evidence of war crimes being committed by the military council. The systematic violence against civilians and destruction of civilian property demonstrates the military council’s continued campaign of terror against its own people, deliberately targeting their lives, homes, and livelihoods. The attack on a civilian fuel trading area without any military presence in the vicinity clearly shows the military council’s disregard for civilian safety and international humanitarian law.
