
The military council has officially announced that Acting President Myint Swe passed away at Military Hospital No. 2 at 8:28 AM on August 7. According to the announcement, his funeral will be held as a state ceremony. Myint Swe had been experiencing declining health since 2023, suffering from decreased mobility, reduced food intake, and Parkinson’s disease affecting his nervous system.
He received medical treatment in Singapore and Myanmar military hospitals during 2024. In July 2025, he was readmitted to Military Hospital No. 2 on July 24 due to significant weight loss, poor appetite, fever, and decreased brain activity. Myint Swe was 74 years old at the time of his death and had served in the military up to the rank of Lieutenant General. He was also known to be a trusted associate of former military dictator Than Shwe.
Myint Swe served as the Chief Minister of Yangon Region from March 30, 2011, to March 30, 2016. During the National League for Democracy government, he was selected by the military representatives’ group to become Vice President on March 30, 2016. Following the military coup led by Senior General Min Aung Hlaing on February 1, 2021, he was appointed as the Acting President of the military council. Myint Swe essentially functioned as a puppet figure for the military council throughout his tenure as Acting President.
