A tragic incident occurred in Wetlet Township, Sagaing Region, where military council troops killed the leader of the People’s Administration Team (PAT) office and a woman. On May 23, around midnight, soldiers from the military outpost in Ywa Tha Gyi village in western Wetlet Township were conducting a military operation near Gyoe Phyu Kon forest area when they shot and killed Ko Myo Aung Kyaw and Ma Ei Mon Kyaw, a 32-year-old woman from Oak Gyi village, who were in a cluster of huts at the time.
The victim Ko Myo Aung Kyaw served as the leader of the People’s Administration Team (PAT) office in Wetlet Township and was also a lawyer who had joined the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM). The military council troops’ shooting was so severe that it completely severed Ko Myo Aung Kyaw’s right arm, and he died instantly from multiple gunshot wounds. Ma Ei Mon Kyaw died from gunshot wounds to her back. According to local sources, Ma Ei Mon Kyaw was a betel nut seller in Wetlet town and reportedly had connections with the military council.
After the incident, the military council troops abandoned their bodies in the cluster of huts. Later, local residents retrieved the bodies and gave them proper burial ceremonies. This incident represents another example of the military council’s brutal actions against civilians and democracy activists, highlighting the ongoing violence perpetrated by the military council against civilian populations and those involved in the democratic movement. The case demonstrates the continued pattern of violence and human rights violations being committed by the military council forces against civilians in Myanmar, particularly targeting those associated with the democratic administration structures and civil society.
