Near Kaunghmudaw Pagoda on the outskirts of Sagaing city in Sagaing Region, members of the Burmese Revolution Force (BRF) carried out a mine attack against military council soldiers who were extorting money from travelers. The incident occurred on June 1st around 4 PM when security forces were collecting illegal payments from passing vehicles on the Sagaing-Shwebo district connecting road. According to a BRF official who spoke to Yangon Modern News Agency, two military personnel were killed instantly in the attack.
The attack took place while military council forces were conducting security checks and collecting money from traveling vehicles. The BRF forces executed the attack using two mines. Among those killed were one military soldier and one militia member, while three others sustained severe injuries. The military personnel were reportedly providing security for a high-ranking officer who was expected to visit Kaunghmudaw Pagoda. They had positioned three vehicles along the road and were conducting security checks while simultaneously extorting money from passing vehicles. At least twelve personnel were believed to be present at the time of the attack. One of the casualties was reportedly dismembered in the blast.
Following the attack, military council forces from Infantry Division 33 retaliated by firing at a civilian vehicle traveling on the road, resulting in the death of the driver. This attack was reportedly carried out in response to a previous incident on May 30th, when artillery fire from Infantry Division 33 had killed a BRF member. The BRF official stated that they would continue their resistance against the military dictatorship until its complete elimination. The area where the attack occurred is known for frequent extortion and harassment of travelers by military forces, who often stop vehicles and demand money from passing civilians.
