The military council has removed two division commanders from their positions – Brigadier General Tin Maung Kyaw of Division 99 and Brigadier General Kyaw Set Myint of Division 33, according to military sources. Brigadier General Tin Maung Kyaw of Division 99 was immediately recalled to Naypyidaw due to military defeats and was placed in reserve force after being removed from his position. Subsequently, Brigadier General Soe Win Tun, the Strategic Commander based in Hakha, was appointed as the new commander of Division 99.
Brigadier General Kyaw Set Myint, commander of Division 33 based in Hpakant, Kachin State, was removed from his position for falsely reporting complete military control over the Hpakant region and for engaging in personal business ventures. He is currently transferred to reserve force and under investigation. The difficulties for the Division 99 commander began after a strategic commander was captured in the Nat Ye Kan area. Following the loss of Tawa Taing Camp, he was immediately summoned to Naypyidaw and transferred to reserve force.
In Hpakant, Brigadier General Kyaw Set Myint had falsely reported to his superiors that Division 33 maintained control over the area while being involved in jade and gold mining operations. When senior officials became aware of this situation, and after reinforcement troops arrived, he was first taken to Myitkyina. He was then sent to the palace interrogation center, placed in reserve force, and is currently under investigation.
Colonel Kaung Min Htut from the Defense Services Academy has been appointed as the new commander of Division 33, replacing Brigadier General Kyaw Set Myint. Colonel Kaung Min Htut is currently in the Sagaing region and will soon arrive at the Division headquarters in Hpakant. Analysts note that the simultaneous removal of two division commanders reflects the military council’s inability to conduct systematic operations and corruption within its ranks. The new appointments and investigations demonstrate ongoing internal challenges within the military council’s command structure.
