
Chinese President Xi Jinping has made direct demands to military council leader Min Aung Hlaing regarding the security of Chinese economic interests and personnel in Myanmar. During their meeting on May 9, the Chinese President demanded practical guarantees for the safety of Chinese staff, organizations, and projects in Myanmar, according to China’s state-run Xinhua News Agency. Additionally, he called for more effective measures to combat cross-border crimes, including online gambling and telecommunications fraud.
Military council leader Min Aung Hlaing responded by emphasizing the importance of relations with China, stating that Myanmar would continue to be China’s trusted friend. He promised to maintain cooperation between the two countries in economic, trade, and energy sectors, while guaranteeing full protection for Chinese projects and personnel in Myanmar. This commitment comes amid ongoing concerns about the security situation in Myanmar and its impact on Chinese investments.
The meeting took place during Min Aung Hlaing’s visit to Moscow, Russia. He was there to attend the 80th anniversary commemoration of victory over Nazi Germany in World War II. According to military sources in Naypyidaw, the meeting with the Chinese President was arranged with Russian assistance. The discussions primarily focused on protecting Chinese economic interests in Myanmar and maintaining stability in the border regions. This meeting highlights the complex relationships between Myanmar’s military council and its powerful neighbors, as well as China’s ongoing concerns about its investments and personnel in Myanmar during the current period of instability.
