During their meeting on May 9, the Chinese President emphasized the need for practical guarantees for the safety of Chinese staff, organizations, and projects in Myanmar. Additionally, he demanded effective measures to combat cross-border crimes, including online gambling and telecommunications fraud occurring in border regions, according to China’s state-run Xinhua News Agency.
Military council leader Min Aung Hlaing responded by promising to accommodate China’s demands, stating that Myanmar places great importance on its relationship with China and will continue to position itself as China’s trusted ally. He further committed to enhancing bilateral cooperation in economics, trade, and energy sectors, while promising to ensure maximum security for Chinese projects and personnel within Myanmar. The military leader emphasized Myanmar’s commitment to serving as China’s reliable and friendly neighbor, highlighting the significance of ongoing cooperation between the two nations in various sectors including trade and energy.
This meeting took place during Min Aung Hlaing’s attendance at the 80th anniversary celebration of World War II victory in Moscow, Russia. Military sources in Naypyidaw confirmed that the meeting with the Chinese President was facilitated through Russian mediation. This meeting represents a significant diplomatic engagement aimed at addressing ongoing conflicts within Myanmar and their impact on Chinese economic interests.
