Military council leader Min Aung Hlaing, during his visit to Belarus, announced that elections would only be held at the end of 2025 or in January 2026, marking five years since the military seized power. He made this announcement during a press conference following his meeting with the President of Belarus on March 7.
According to military sources in Naypyidaw, Min Aung Hlaing frequently mentions in meetings his intention to serve a full five-year term as the caretaker government leader. He has also indicated that depending on his health condition and the country’s needs, he could potentially serve another term. The sources suggest that he plans to remain involved in political processes even after the elections. The military council leader has stated that 53 political parties have registered for the military-planned election, as announced during his press conference in Belarus.
However, democratic forces and the majority of the public reject and oppose the military council’s planned election. After seizing power, the military council nullified the results of the 2020 election and detained members of the elected government. Currently, anti-military council revolutionary movements continue throughout the country. The announcement of further election delays comes amid ongoing resistance against military rule and widespread opposition to the military council’s political roadmap.
