The military council’s forces conducted an aerial bombardment on Han Aung Mangala Monastery in Nabar village, Inntaw Township, Sagaing Region, resulting in significant damage to the monastery building and injuries to a female traveler. The attack, which occurred on the morning of June 22, was confirmed by local residents to be a deliberate targeting of the monastery in the absence of any active fighting in the area. The airstrikes were carried out in two waves, first at 5:45 AM and then at 5:51 AM.
The Han Aung Mangala Monastery, located near the Nabar junction on the Mandalay-Myitkyina highway, serves as a significant landmark for travelers in the region. The attack caused substantial damage to the monastery building, and a female traveler sustained head injuries from bomb shrapnel. According to local sources, there was no military presence or conflict in the area that could have prompted such an attack, indicating it was a deliberate targeting of civilian infrastructure.
Nabar village has been largely evacuated since September 2023, with residents forced to flee due to ongoing conflict. Since that time, monks have been unable to reside at the monastery, and villagers have abandoned their homes. The exodus was triggered by frequent battles and airstrikes in the area, forcing local residents to seek safety elsewhere. Currently, the area serves primarily as a transit point for travelers, and while military council forces no longer maintain a presence in the region, the area continues to face deliberate aerial attacks such as this incident. The monastery’s location along a major transportation route has made it particularly vulnerable, despite its religious significance and civilian nature.
