Security sources have reported that the military council has installed surveillance cameras throughout Nyaung-U Township in Mandalay Region, with monitoring operations being conducted from within the Township General Administration Department office. This heightened security measure comes in response to frequent attacks by People’s Defense Force (PDF) units in the area. The comprehensive surveillance system has been implemented particularly in strategic locations across the city, with special attention given to entry and exit points, major intersections, and the city center.
The installation of CCTV cameras began in early April, with a systematic deployment focusing on key areas including major traffic junctions, traffic lights, and central urban areas. Local sources indicate that additional cameras have been installed in locations where PDF attacks have frequently occurred. The surveillance operation is being continuously monitored from within the Township Administration Office, allowing the military council to maintain constant observation of movement throughout the city. This represents a significant escalation in the military council’s surveillance capabilities in the Bagan-Nyaung-U area.
Despite the military council’s directive to cancel Thingyan festival celebrations this year, the Nyaung-U Township General Administration Department has decided to proceed with the traditional water festival activities. This decision comes after having already collected festival donations from local businesses and entrepreneurs. However, the situation remains tense, with authorities maintaining heightened security measures throughout the festival period. The contrast between the continuation of traditional festivities and the implementation of strict surveillance measures reflects the complex security situation currently facing the city, as the military council attempts to maintain control while facing ongoing resistance from PDF forces.
