The military council has forcibly demolished more than 80 houses along the Mandalay-Mattaya road in Kwa Ni Kan village, Patheingyi Township, Mandalay Region, using excavators and bulldozers under the pretext of road expansion. According to a representative from MDY Revolution, the demolition was carried out by over 50 military personnel over three days from March 4 to March 6, systematically destroying homes on both the eastern and western sides of the main road. The operation was conducted without prior notice to residents, and civilians were not allowed to retrieve their belongings before the destruction began.
The demolition has resulted in significant losses for the local population, including their homes, possessions, and livelihood-related materials, forcing many to flee and become internally displaced. During the demolition, military personnel arrested those attempting to photograph or document the destruction, while armed Pyu Saw Htee militia members were deployed to threaten and intimidate local residents. The affected civilians are now facing severe hardships related to basic necessities and have been rendered homeless. The military’s actions have caused extensive damage to community infrastructure and personal property, leaving families without shelter or means of sustenance.
These actions by the military council represent clear violations of basic human rights and constitute crimes under international law. The forceful destruction of civilian property while disregarding legal procedures exemplifies the military council’s pattern of violence and oppression against the people. This incident serves as a stark example of the conditions faced by Myanmar’s civilians and reflects the military council’s unlawful actions. The destruction has not only resulted in immediate material losses but has also created long-term humanitarian challenges for the affected communities, highlighting the ongoing crisis faced by Myanmar’s civilian population under military rule.
