A representative from the Pekon Township People’s Security Force has confirmed to Yangon Modern News that hundreds of internally displaced persons (IDPs) are fleeing after the military council forces launched rocket attacks on villages housing displaced civilians in the eastern part of Pekon Township, Karenni State. The attacks began around 11:30 PM on June 9th, when military council troops started firing rockets at villages in the eastern sector of Pekon Township where IDPs had taken shelter.
While the attacks resulted in damage to some civilian homes, there were no reported injuries among the residents. However, the indiscriminate rocket attacks by the military forces have forced the displaced civilians to flee once again to safer locations. A spokesperson from the Pekon Township People’s Security Force stated, ‘The military council forces are attacking villages on the eastern bank where hundreds of IDPs are staying with rockets. There has been damage to residential homes.’
Since the military coup, the armed forces have been targeting civilians and residential areas in Karenni State, causing local residents to abandon their homes and seek refuge elsewhere. Currently, IDPs in Pekon Township are evacuating to safer locations, living in fear due to the military’s continued heavy weapons and rocket attacks. The military council’s unprovoked attacks on civilian areas have created an atmosphere of terror and uncertainty among the displaced population, who are now forced to relocate multiple times in search of safety.
