In Insein Township, Yangon Region, the military council is forcing the demolition of more than 200 homes belonging to retired railway staff. These residences are located near the Insein Railway Diesel Locomotive Factory and were previously designated as housing for railway employees. The military council has issued an order requiring the homes to be demolished by June 20, threatening to use military and police force to destroy the properties if residents fail to comply with the deadline.
The forced demolitions are taking place in the area around Insein Station and the City Circle Diesel Factory’s Division 7 territory, where homeowners are being compelled to demolish their own houses. When households requested a one-month extension to allow more time for relocation, the military council rejected their appeal. Furthermore, residents have been warned that they will not be permitted to remove any belongings after 6:30 AM on June 21. The military council has threatened to take legal action against homeowners who leave their demolished house materials on the site.
Since the military coup, the council has been systematically destroying and confiscating civilian homes across the country under various pretexts. This forced demolition of retired railway staff houses in Insein Township represents another instance of the military council’s unjust actions against civilian properties, as noted by local residents. The affected homeowners are particularly concerned as no alternative housing arrangements have been provided for their relocation. This situation exemplifies the ongoing pattern of the military council’s oppressive actions against civilians, forcing them to abandon their homes without adequate compensation or alternative housing solutions.
