According to a spokesperson from the People’s Defense Force, thousands of residents from nearby villages have been forced to flee to safety after the military council forces burned down Kone Village in Sagaing Township, Sagaing Region. The incident occurred around 2 PM on May 29, when military council troops entered Kone Village without any ongoing fighting and systematically set fire to civilian homes.
Currently, the military column remains stationed in and around Kone Village, preventing displaced residents from returning to their homes. As a result, the exact number of houses destroyed in the fire cannot yet be confirmed. The People’s Defense Force spokesperson reported that a large number of military troops are deployed within Kone Village, restricting civilian movement in and out of the area. It remains unconfirmed whether any residents have been arrested by the military forces.
Due to the continued presence of the military column in and around Kone Village, thousands of residents from neighboring villages remain displaced, having been forced to abandon their homes and agricultural activities. These displaced civilians are now facing significant challenges regarding food, shelter, and basic necessities. The military council’s raids and destruction of villages have severely impacted the socioeconomic lives of local residents, who are now struggling to survive as internally displaced persons. The systematic burning of villages and forced displacement has created a humanitarian crisis in the region, with civilians bearing the brunt of the military’s actions.
