The terrorist military council has continued aerial attacks on earthquake-affected areas during a temporary ceasefire period, prompting Fortify Rights to call on the United Nations to immediately impose aviation fuel and weapons embargo against the military. Despite declaring a temporary ceasefire from April 2 to April 30, the military council continued to conduct airstrikes on civilian homes and religious buildings where earthquake evacuees had taken shelter.
In Sagaing Region, approximately 31 airstrikes were conducted between April 8 and 19, with a particularly intense campaign on April 14 (Myanmar New Year’s Day) involving 24 separate attacks using fighter jets, Mi-35 helicopters, Y-12 aircraft, and drones. The military also carried out repeated bombing raids on Depayin, Shwebo, and Kani townships. Notably, on April 23, an airstrike on Let Hlut village in Depayin township killed five civilians, including a 13-year-old child.
The military also targeted a monastery in Intine village, Mandalay Region, where a mobile medical team was treating earthquake victims, resulting in injuries to six people including monks and local residents. In Chin State, at least three Christian churches were attacked from the air, including the Town Baptist Church in Mindat, Christ the King Catholic Church in Falam, and the Assembly of God Church in Mindat.
According to the UN Human Rights Office, the terrorist military has conducted more than 120 attacks during the declared ceasefire period, affecting at least 51 townships across Myanmar. These attacks have particularly impacted areas already struggling to recover from earthquake damage, demonstrating the military council’s disregard for civilian safety and humanitarian concerns. The continued targeting of religious buildings, medical facilities, and civilian infrastructure has prompted increased calls for international action to prevent the military from accessing resources needed to conduct these aerial attacks.
