Despite the military council’s announcement of extending the ceasefire period, they continue to launch artillery attacks on territories controlled by the Pa-O National Liberation Army (PNLA), according to PNLA Information and Communication Officer Khun Rain Yan. The military council declared a one-month extension of the ceasefire from June 1 to June 30, but their ground forces, strategic commands, and affiliated Pa-O National Organization (PNO) militia have failed to comply with the declaration and continue their offensive operations.
On June 1, artillery attacks were launched against the Naung Htaung area in Sisaing Township, and on June 2, they targeted the PNLO headquarters in the Kadawgyi area of Maukme Township near the Banmaw region. The PNLA Information Department confirmed that at least ten artillery shells were fired without any ongoing battles or military engagement in these areas. These attacks have caused fear and displacement among local residents who have been forced to flee their homes for safety.
The PNLA Information and Communication Officer emphasized that the military council’s actions clearly demonstrate the disparity between their public statements and actual conduct on the ground. While the military council issues ceasefire declarations under the pretext of peace negotiations, their continued military operations in ethnic areas reveal their lack of genuine commitment to peace, according to analysts. The ongoing attacks in ethnic regions, despite official announcements of ceasefire extensions, highlight the military council’s inconsistent approach to the peace process and their failure to honor their own declarations.
